Genesis Coupe reborn as bona fide sports car
Last fall, I drove the best-selling Hyundai Genesis Coupe 3.8 GT at Mosport and was quite impressed with the car’s superb balance and exciting performance. But, today I’m at the Spring Mountain Motorsports Ranch in Pahrump, Nevada to drive the significantly-refreshed 2013 Hyundai Genesis Coupe – both the 2.0T and 3.8 GT models – and boy what fun they are!
Each gets more power and suspension tweaks that make both cars even better, along with much improved, more refined interiors and transmission choices. The 2.0T has a new twin-scroll turbocharger and a 50% larger intercooler that bumps horsepower by 30% to 274 and torque to 275 lb.-ft., while the 3.8L V6 now makes 348 hp and 295 lb.-ft. on premium fuel.

Hyundai has revised its six-speed manual transmission for more precise gear shifts, and introduces a new eight speed automatic with Shiftronic manual mode and paddle shifters. Not only that, a three-stage ESC allows drivers to partially and fully disengage both the electronic traction and stability controls while ABS remains active. The intermediate setting no longer cuts engine power.
